AIDC: How "Cloudy" is the Future for AIDC?
AIDC: How "Cloudy" is the Future for AIDC? Bert Moore Editor With cloud computing, we see access to data, not just data entry, moving to the point of use. One of the earliest advantages of automatic identification and data collection (AIDC) technologies was to decentralize data entry. In other words, rather than having a central data entry facility that laboriously (and often erroneously) key entered hand written data collected by workers (often with less-than-perfect penmanship), AIDC technology enabled those workers to directly enter data by swiping a magnetic card or scanning an OCR/MICR string or a bar code symbol. In other words, it moved data collection to the point of data generation. The definition of cloud computing seems as changeable as the weather and, as much as anything, depends on who you talk with. Definitions range from the whole Internet of Things (IoT) to managed hosting to software as a service (SaaS) to any web-accessible application. Whatever the definition, all of these will impact, and benefit from, the use of AIDC technologies and mobile computing. Publication date: January 2011
