Solstice Medical - Indiana University Health System
Solstice Medical - Indiana University Health System 2013 AIM AIDC (Non RFID) Case Study Competition Participant The Business & Technical Challenge When IU Health contacted Solstice Medical, their surgical supply pick and returns process was experiencing challenges in efficiently and accurately managing tens of thousands of supplies - from syringes and bandages to drugs and surgical devices. These challenges were resulting in delayed surgeries, excessive inventory, labor-intensive returns and a lack of real-time performance monitoring. The Solution “Before, we used to do the process manually. Every patient has a paper ticket, which may contain up to 100 items, depending on the type of surgery the patient is having. There was nothing in place to ensure that all items were picked with the correct quantity,” says Mike Thompson, Regional Manager Statewide Supply Chain Operations. Within a few months of implementing OR, we achieved six sigma quality and performance continues to increase. OR was cost effective and easily adopted by staff and management,” continued Thompson. The results are dramatic. With a mere 1% picking error reduction, IU Health now delivers surgical supplies to 68 operating rooms at their thr ee Indianapolis downtown locations with 99.99% accuracy. This accuracy has eliminated 12,000 supply delivery errors which translates into saving 3.5 months of labor hours and $2.8 million dollars annually.
